"Lloyd's Register, of Shipping," in its October number, would ordinarily, have contained full particulars of that industry in tho quarter ended Septem< ber, but such details aro missing in. the number just issued, and an'editoria} note states that in conecquenco of th/ war it is not possible at present to pubi lish the usual information regarding th< shipbuilding industry throughout thf world. The present returns are vhero, fore confined to merchant ehips iil course of construction in tho tnited Kingdom.
The returns, which only take into a© count vessels of 100 tons and upwardi the construction of which has actually begun, show that, excluding warships, therowore 486 vessels, of 1,723,550 tons gross, under construction in tho Uniteo Kingdom at the close of tho quarter. It is remarked that whilst-tho tonnage under construction in tho United Kingdam Was about 1400 tons higher than that which was in hand at. tho end of tho previous quarter, the rate of jregress in morobant ehig construction, 15 much, . .
