PICTURE OF A GALICIAN BATTLEFIELD
HIDEOUS INTENSITY OF MODERN . WAR. ("Times" and Sydney "Snn" Services.) London, November 17. _ The hideous intensity of modern-war m described by a correspondent in Galicja,. For eight days there was a varying struggle before the Austrians, broken and bleeding, retired. The field, strewn with dead, is /sown deep. with 1 relics of defeat. .;. '' '■ The Russian howitzers had ploughed)' up'the ground, making holes' five feet deep and ten across, and so close together that it- was possible; by stepping from ono to another, to travel hundreds of yarde without leaving them. The'■ ground was literally strewn with pieces of uniforms and hideous fragments - of projectiles. Zone of Misery. . Thousands of men are mouldering in unnamed graves on the battlefield. .Air ways depressing, this is one that.causes peculiar sadness, because, whilo the men are prowling over the scene of devastation, they liear .the roar of the tumult in the west, telling that the same thing is Tecurrine. In tho very centre'of this zone of i misery two reads intersect, marked by n huge wooden cross with a carved figure of the Saviour, which has hung there for-a hundred years. The top of the wooden -upright was shattered by a bullet, and the arm destroyed by shrapnel. The patient face looks down on a newly T mado grave, wherein lie the'shattered remains of 124 men who died almost at the foot of the figure.' A little further away is the epot/where the lasf stand was made. '. r . ......:..,....' '"■
