AUSTRALIA'S NEW BURDEtf (Roo. November 18, 10 p.m.)' Melbourne-November 18. Senator Pearce, Commonwealth Defenco Minister, has announced that the Japanese Government intimated to tho British Government that it was ready to .hand over the islands recently held ' by the Germans in the Pacific, and . seized by the Japanese, to an Australian ' force. The British Government _ had . been informed that it was the.intention of tho Australian Government. to act accordingly. The British Government had bo informed -the Japanese Government, and to this end an Australian: force bo dispatched and remain - inoccupation of tie islands till the end , of tho war, when the matter ;of their! ultimate disposal would be a question for the consideration of the Allied Powers. ■"■••.■ The Commonwealth will have the responsibility of not only a military occupation, but of trade matters and other commercial arrangements. Colonel Petliebridgo (Secretary of Defence) will, accompany the force as officer-in-charge, and ho will be appointed Australian Commissioner for.. the NorthWest Pacific, with authority to make suitable uecessary arrangements with! other Powers. -
