TWO CITY FIRES
A WOMAN'S NARROW ESCAPE.; Hie Fire Brigade was called out twics during last night, but fortunately both outbreaks were got well.in hand before the strong wind that was blowing could carry the flames on to the • adjoining -property. . , _
• -The first call was at seven minutes past six to an'outbreak in a 6table and loft at 67 Hawkestone Crescent, occupied by Win. Mayhe'w, carrier. Tho building, which was owned by Mr. Carmichael, of Auckland, and the contents were both severly damaged. Neither the building nor contents .was insured.. The cause of the outbreak is attributed to Rome sparks being blown from an'adjoining chimney Alio on to some sacks in the stable and igniting them. BLAZE IN GARRETT STREET. The second call was at ten minutes to ten; to a fire in a two-story sixroomed, wood and iron house ;n Garrett Street (off Cuba Street). In this house one.of the occupants, an elderly woman had a narrow escape from the burning building, being rescued by some neighbours. The timely arrival of the Ibrigade prevented the flames from spreading to tho premises of Evans and Schwartz (fancy goods dealers) in front, The house was occupied by Mrs. Hannah Jackson, and belonged to the M'Carthy Estate. The insurances on .the. building were not available last : night, but the contents were insured for. £75 in the Northern' Office,.and a policy of £40 covered i the wearing • apparol of- young Mr. Jackson, an inmate of the ; house. Tho outbreak is believed to havo/driginated in the front bedroom of the house, which was occupied by: Miss.E.. Qos.'
