(From Our Own Correspondent.) \ At the conclusion of' Monday evening's meeting of the Petone Borough Council a special report prepared by the sewerage engineer (Sir. R. Fox) was 'considered in committee: It was found that the works to be completed '.would." exceed the estimate by about . £16,676.' The loan sanctioned by the ratepayers was £40,000, £34,000 for tho service, and £6000 for household connections. The increases were due mainly to the following causes •.—Additions to plant, oil engines, etc., necessitated by the enormous amount of water.mot with, partly due to, the defective laying of the old surface mains £1800; additions to electrical plant, storage battery,': and putting conduits underground instead of overhead, £7000; concrete foundations for'pipes, £2721; morease in Tate of wages by 11 per cent., and a further inorease during the winter months to 16, per cent., £2255; laying service' to boundary line, £1900; total £15,676 15s. 4d. After considering the report the council adopted the following resolutions: (1) To carry out the work so that when the electric light is installed, No. 2 section will be completed about March i. (2) To place before the ratepayers about January 20 a loan, 'proposal to complete the; works, the matter to be further consideerd at the December meeting. (3) The engineer to prepare a'report, showing cost of connecting the eastern drainage with the main scheme, and making, provision for dealing with the surface 'water in the eastern area.
A 1 costume dramatic recital was given by-Mr. J; Qulfordßell and Mibb Betty Purdpm and'their pupils, at St. James's ■ Hall, Lower Hutt, last evening, in aid of tie poor of Great Britain and Belgian Fund. The building was packod and tie performance was greatly appreciated. Mr. Bell rendered "The Gown's Soliloquy" and "Her Majesty Hath. Been Pleaso" in his usual artistic style, and Miss Purdom charmed the audience with the humorous ■ Bketch "Reggie." Recitation, dialogues, and character sketches, were given by, the Misses M. Galliohan, G. M'lnerney, H. O'Shea, Isie Kohn, Daphne Hobbs, Ngaire Lemmon, Lita Caseyy Aggie Atkins, Berta Oross.Millie Knight, Madge Shearer, Vida J.ones, Janie Warnes, and Ida Trunin, Mr. H. G. Shakes and Master Noel Liardet. It is anticipated that the fund for which the entertainment was held, will be considerably augmented by last evening's Teoital. . v , Thefuneral of the late Mrs. Jackson, widow of the late Henry Jackson, who died on Sunday, took place yesterday at St. James's Church, Lower Hutt. Mrs. Jackson was one of the oldest residents in the Valley, arriving at Lower Hutt in 1862, and was a member of the choir of St. James's Anglican Church and an enthusiastio church worker. She leaves sis sons: Messrs. R. K. Jackson, 'solicitor, Masterton; F. W. P. Jackson, of Sydney; E. H. Jackson, of the Union I Bank staff, Christchurch; C. C. Jackson, • sheep-farmer, Kopuaranga; P. Jackson, of the firm of Wilfordj. Levi, and Jackson; and Mr. E. 0. Jackson. There are two daughters: Mrs. Barclay Hector, and Mra. Dillon-Kelly; ' The following will represent the Hutt Bowling Club in a friendly match, with Newtown this afternoon: Norris, Hayes, Jones, Pole (s.) j Trovethick,, Qenvmell, Shearer, Eddie (s.); Parker, Humphries, Judd, Casey (s.); Holand, W. 0.
