"SACRIFICE" AND PATRIOTISM.

S>r, —I notice in tho "Taranaki Herald" this evening tlie announcement that .tho childreu in Wellington liavo contributed £712 for the Belgian children through "sacrificing" their Guy Fawkes celebrations! ' Now tho sentiment of this is beautiful, and is ideal oil tho one side, but how* about the other side—the shopkeepers? They also must have been called upon to sacrifice, even although tliey may have given their quota to the funds, for presumably the shopkeepers in Wellington, as elsewhere, would'procure their annual stock of fireworks as usual (and which are poSsibly only sold on one day, or at least one time of the year),,and for what? To have them lie 011 the shelves, unsold, owing to the children's "sacrifice"!

, The effect of the war has already been felt by business people, and surely-it seems wrong to be the means of making them lose more business unnecessarily!

Now, it is "up to" someone in Wel•lington to organise a big pyrotechnic display, the profits of which could .be given to the.War Fund, and this would be compensating the shopkeepers and also' swelling the good cause fund. Wo must not forget Britain's war motto is "Buaine3s as usual," so be patriotic, but fair. Thanking you.— I am, etc., . & QUID PRO QUO.
