FEEDING THE GERMANS
WITH DOMINION MEAT?
STATEMENT BY LOCAL BUSINESS MAN
Mr. H. Q. Hill moved at the Central Chamber of Commerce yesterday that a deputation should wait on. the Prime Minister (tho Hon. W. F. Massey) and impressing upon him "the necessity for the Government taking such steps as aro necessary to provide that all foodstuffs going from New Zealand to neutral porta, shall not be for the enemy and further if the needs of the British Empire during the war aro such that it requires all the foodstuffs produced by these overseas Dominions, I hen the Government will immediately > prohibit the export of foodstuffs to countries outside the British Empire and its Allies." Mr. Hill said that the total shipments to New York and Boston Bince tho war commenced were:— Veal. ~ "' Lamb. Car-Rabbits. Car- " Qrs. casses. Cases, casses. Delphio ... 1360 — 3084 37,687 Sussex ..... — — — 5,000 Nairnshire... 469 21 — . 34,791 Total ....1829 21 3084 77,478 Tho mover expressed the opinion that if wool was being sent from America for German use, food, also, would bo sent across. He said that he had it on authority which he did not doubt that the bulk of the New Zealand tinned meats.Which, were sent to London had been bought up by American firms, rewrapped by them, and were now feeding the Germans who were fightingthe British. Mr. R. Hall said that he was pleased to see that as a .result of the' New Zealand Government's activities so much ;meat had gono to America recently. We would have to be very careful as to what we said to America on this question and would have to avoid offending them. The Americans were our own flesh and blood. Mr. Hill: Some of them.
Mr. Hall agreed, however, that eome protection should be eecured. ■ The motion was carried.
