It ia well-nigh impossible to give an adequate description of the absolutely unprecedented state of activity In the shipbuilding yards of Messrs. Vickers (Ltd.) at Barrow. For obviou3 reasons precise details of -the armaments under construction cannot be given (says the British "Trade Review"), but all branches of the supply are being pushed forward at maximum pressure. This has meant a large increase of tho staff—at present . about JO.CCO men are employed—and .the ■ firm have fortunately been able to take on hands from tho yards of the builders of email merchant ships where trade is slack. There is work for many more raon, and now tho serious problem of housing these thousands lias 1 arisen. The firm's appeal to householders in Barrow to accommodate these men has met with a patriotic response, but the loading builders of the district are co-operating with Messrs. Vdckers, Ltd., in a big scheme for the construction of adequate dwellings. It is anticipated that tho Himitangi will arrive back at Lyttelton from the Chatham Islands to-morrow.
