Tie. fortnightly -sale of ivool, skins, hides, tallow, and sundries was .held in Wellington yesterday by the various brokers, whose Reports are appended:—' Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Teport that tliey offered a good catalogue to a full attendance of buyers. Competition was keen throughout., and prices for all . .lines ,were firm at last sales' rates. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report that competition.was keen at last' sales' rates for wool and hides. Good. full-woolled skins wero aisliado higher,; and we, obtained up to 9Jd. for fine crossbreds. Jle3srs. Murray, Hobcrts end Co., Ltd., report' that competition was extremely keen, firmness ,in the . wool market . at 'j Home having a stimulating effect;. piic«4,
for 'sheepskins showing <m advance of Jd. to 3d. per lb. Tendency in hides was towards a slightly lower volue. Tallow was firm.
. Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., report that prices wcto good and competition keen. Tallow . showed an improvement on recent prices, buyers advancing Zs. per cwt. on all classes.
Messrs. .W*. and G. Tnrnbull and t Co. .report that prices were on a . par with last eale, with the exception of good combing skins, which showed an advance of a farthing to a halfpenny.
The United Farmer®' Co-operative Association, Ltd., and the Wairara-pa Farmers'. 00-operative Association also give the average prices.. Messrs. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., DanneTiirko, report:—We submitted a catalogue consisting of 22 bales and 84 bagß wool, 2508 sheepskins, 138 hides, and 199 calfskins, and 60. packages tallow. Values, in sympathy with the recent "London soles,, showed an advance of id. per lb. in sheepskins, and wool and hides sold Jd. to 3d. above October rates. We cleared our catalogue at.prices.we feel sure are satisfactory to vendors. Wool:. The Bank of England discount rate was on January 2;--1914, reduced from 5 to 4J per cent., on January 22 it was reduced to 4 per cent., and on January 29 to 3 per cent. On July 30 the rate wo, 3 raised to 4 per cent., on July 31 it was raised to 8 per cent., and on August, 1 it was further advanced', to 10 per cent. On August 6 the rate was reduced: to 6 :.per cent., on Aneust 7 it was further reduced to 5 per cent., at which rate it now stands. The 'Bank of France rate ia 7 per cent., .'as against 7 per cent, last week, ud, ( j>er cent last.year. , . OPEN MARKET RATES.
