The result of experiments which havebeen in progress Jor some time at Mo-' turoa for the conversion of ironsand from the Taranaki beaches, where a million tons art held, into pig-iron, was Seen to-day. When the smelting fnrnace was tapped about a ton of- molten iron flowed therefrom; , _ ■ The process, patented by Mr. J. A. Heskett.of Melbourne, consists of mixing ironsand with coal breeze, then coking same in ovens, and then placed in a blast-furnace where the breeze acts as the' heating power. The demonstrations were, witnessed by several townspeople, who were greatly impressed. Owing to the newness of the furnace the ..process of smelting took a longer time than will bo the case when the apparatus is in thorough working order. - The patentee, who supervised the operations,- is confident of success, and expects to be able to produce a ton per hour when-tha works are completely equipped/ . '
