FIGHTING IN SOUTH AFRICA
The news from tie front ■this morning is meagre, but good. Tha 'Allies are holding their own in the great battle in Belgium, and along tie -whole of their line in France. The German success at Dismude reported yesterday does not seem to hare resulted in the gain of mora than a heap of ruins a few yards in advance of the previous, line.' In the Eastern theatre of war the Russians are continuing to advance, and are now only a few miles from the Austrian fortress of Cracow, in thesouth', while in the north they are well across the Prussian border. The appeal of the Crown Prince of Bavaria to his men and the order reported to have been issued by the Kaiser indicate that the whole .. strength,of Germany is being concentrated'on the struggle to the south of Belgium. Further details of the Emden's doings at the Cocos Islands have come to hand, and an official report from South 'Africa records the worsting of the rebels in a series of. engagements in which the Union troops inflicted severe losses. The most important item on the Turkish-6ide is that the Gocben was seriously damaged during the bombardment of the Daidanelles by the Allied fleets.
