A good deal of interest has been taken in the matter of tho arrest oS'-Mr. P. E. N. Gaudin, an Auckland city councillor, who was taken into custody on Monday night on the arrival at Auckland of- the steamer Navua from Samoa. However, it was not until yesterday that the reason for the arrest was made known. The Defence authorities state Mr. Gaudin is charged with having carried correspondence from ■Germans in Samoa to Germans in New Zealand and elsewhere, thereby avoiding the Samoan censorship on correspondence-. Ho is being.held a military prisoner until further particulars are obtained from Samoa.
His Excel'enoy the Governor, the Earl of Liverpool, as patron of tho Great Britain, Ireland, and Belgium Relief Fund, forwarded the first instalment of the fund's contribution to England, and yesterday received from tho Secretary of State the following cablegram:— "With reference, to your telegram of November 5, His Majesty's Government is most grateful for contributions to Relief Fund." According to a correspondent, 40 per cent, of the officers of the London office of the National Bank of New Zealand have volunteered for. 6orvice at the front. Conscience money to tho amount of 10s. has been forwarded to the Treasury Department by somo person unIcncwn, and- is to be paid to tho Public Account. A Press Association telegram from Invercargill states that Robert M'Lean Johnson, single, 31 years of age, employed as accountant for a firm of solicitors, has been missing since Tuesday morning. The subject of hosing house gardens was again before tho Wellington City Council last evening. The counoil resolved:—"That tho recommendation of tho City Engineer ... bo adopted, viz., that the present system of Wring meters be discontinued, and that owners and occupiers of properties bo permitted to purchase metore from the corporation at cost price, pins tho cost ot fixing (the Engineer estimates the cost of ' purchase and fixing a jin. meter at £3), and that suoh moters be paid for by instalments of 6s. per annum, the purchaser to be responsible for tho proper protection of tho meter, All the meters to be of standard patterns, carofuUy tested, and left in good order by tho corporation."

In connection with the caee in which Wm. Faulkner ie charged -with assaulting George Blake and the latter with' assaulting Faulkner, the police have been successful in tracing WiJliam Faulkner. The case in which it is alleged some senous allegations will be made will probably , be' taken oa November 20.
The request of the Island Bay Life Saving and Surf Club for the erection of a bathing 6hed on the Island Bay beaoh, exactly similar to the shed erected for the Maranui Club at Lyall Bay, at a cost of just over £200, was agreed to by the City Council lost evening. A man named Frank Addin, who appeared on remand at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday morning oharged with drunkenness, had apparently for some weeks past been indulging in a caroußal. According to the solicitor appearing for him, he nad been spending £10 a day. His excessive libations had so affected him that: when arrested he was remanded for a week for ourativp treatment. The Magistrate adopted the wisest course under the'ciroumstancos and ordered a prohibition order to be taken out against defendant, and to pay 17s. 6d., the cost of medical attention.
