(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) St. Augustine's Hall'. at Petone was well filled last evening' in Bpite of the boisterous weather for the; costume dramatic recital given by Mr. 3. Culford. Bell, Miss Betty Purdom, and their pupils in aid of the Poor of Great Britain and Belgium 'Fund. Owing'to the length of the programme encores were dispensed with. ■ ' Mr. Bell gave the graveyard scene .from ''Hamlet," a Cockney speech, '"Her; Majesty Has Been Pleased, and also took part in the comedy sketch, "A 'Bus Bide," with Miss Purdom. The last-named lady, in a humorous sketch- entitled "Reggie," won much applause. Other performers were ,the Misses Griffiths, Zita Casey, E. Warburton, N. Lemmon, Tasker, Snell, M. Gallichan, D. M'Kenziej M. Robertson, P. Hayward, and E. Nicholls,. Mr. J. S, Gandell, and Masters Loith Riddell - and ) Noel Liardet., x ' ' . A meeting was held at Petone last evening for the purpose of forming a swimming club. Mr. S. Clark presided over .an .attendance of about 35. It was unanimously decided to' form a club, to be known as the Petone teur Swimming and Life-saying Club.. The following officers were appointed:—Patron, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan); president, Mr. H. Palmer; vice-presidents, Messrs. Weara'e, "W. Fraser, Samuel, D. Eraser, Gustafsen, Wilford, Colesj Lynskey, Card; Ransford, Anderson, Townsend, Kerr, Armstrong Hooper,.Swinbourne, Nealo, and Packard; club captain, Mr. E, Rise; deputy-captain, Mr. G. Tancred; secretary.- Mr., P. Elbe; treasurer, Mr. ' S. Clark; committee, Messrs. T, Price, G. Dent, G. Fraser, 0. Burridge, and T. Dont; auditor, Mr, D. Fraser. A sub-committee was appointed to wait .upon the Petone Borough Council next Monday evening, in respect to bathingsheds. Rules similar to those issued by the "Wellington Swimming/ Club are to be submitted for approval: at the next club meeting, and a recommendation to the committee that tho .season be opened as early as possible in December wa6 carried. It was intimated during the evening that a ladies' branch of tho club would be formed at an early date. '-: Tho weekly meeting of the Hope of Petone Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was held last evoning at the Ranfurly Hall, Petone, Bro. Rose, C.T., presiding. . Visiting members wero present from Star of "Wellington and Pioneer Lodges, and also the district Chief Templar, Bro. Ingram, the district Marshal,/Bro.Fraser, and the district Chaplain, Sister Ingram. Competitions were held during tho evening, Sister Moore and Bro. Ingram being the winners. Addresses on the No-License question wero delivered by Bros. Ingram and Fraser, and one new member was initiated. The Lodgo was closed by the D.C.T., who thanked the member for their Hospitality. . '.••"' The Petone Defenco RifiVClub will shoot the first match in the first series on Saturday: ranges 300 yards and 500 yards,' ten shots at each. This will be the first match counting for tho club's championship. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over tho monthly sitting of the Upper Hutt Court yesterday. Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in tho following undefended civil cases:—\V. H. Edwards v. Neil Carmichael £2 165., costs 18s.; J. Finlay v. J. H. M. Uru £6 7s. 6d., costs 18s. The police'proceeded against a man named Rolleston, who was charged with keeping a- coffee stall on a public road. ' Rolleston was convicted, and fined 10s., with costs 7s. j
