Friends in Stratford were much relieved (says the Stratford "Post") to hear direct from Dr. A. Dillon Carbery, who went to the front with the first field ambulance contingent of the British Expeditionary Force. Dr. Carbery .is attached to the R.A.M.0., as Major, . and writing from a small villago in France (the entire romaining population of which appears to be women and wounded) intimates that he is practically in" charge of the place as chief of the medical staff there. The place was twice attacked by the Germans, and the school builduig6 have boon converted into temporary hospitals. Dr., Carbery speaks an most glowing terms i of the British "Tommy"; his wonder* iul bravery' and his quaint ways. Atl time of writing, Dr. Carbery was quite) well and very much at home among6i( the French people.

.Tho death has occurred in Californra) of Mr. John R. Gray, formerly of Auck*' land, but recently a director of the Do» minion Trust.Company, Vancouver. Mr,.Gray, who was a native of Scotland,; and came to Auckland about 38 years ago, was the father of Mr. Andrew. Gray, of Auckland. Twelve years ago he left for Vancouver, British Columbia, and he usually returned to Auckland; for the winter months. Mr. Gray wag,, 77 years of ago.
Mr. Finlay Bethune, of Johnsonville, was yesterday the recipient of a. hand-t some piece of plate, presented by thd, membors of tho Johusonvillo Tonnia, Club to commemorate Mr. Betbune'S: 'retirement from the secretaryship of tba. club. Mr. F. T. Moore, president of the club, rhado th=s presentation, and said that tho solid silver token of his fellow members' regard would not out-* last the deep respect and esteem sin-* cerely entertained for Mr. Bethune by) .all membors of the club. Mr.. Bethune. was also unanimously elected a life member in return for his eleven years of service.
The death is announced from Auckland of Mr. Thomas Frost manager of Messrs. George Court and Sons, Ltd.. Karangahape Road 1 . Mr_ Frost died suddenly on Sunday morning at the ago of 38 years. Entering the employ or tie firm as parcel boy in 18S8, Mr. Frost rose to the most responsible position in its service. Ho leaves a widow.
