HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) and Councillors Hodgius, Meldrum, Kemptliorne, Brassell, Clendon, Parsonage, Ball, and H°bbs. The Government Printer replied to an inquiry
by the town olerk that in consequence of short stocks of paper on hand, the circulation of the New Zealand Gazette had been very much curtailed. ' The Postmaster, Lower Hutt, asked whether the council would agree .to a silencer being attached to the chimes oftho town clock so as to silenco the chimes during the hours of the night. It was agreed -to accept the silencer, to be used from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Mr. S. Dudding pointed out the inconvenience caused to tradesmen by the council's decision not to lend any of the staff, and asked the council to reconsider its decision in the matter. It was decided to refer this matter'to the Works Committee. Mr. P. Curtis applied to have the drainage connected to his section at Te: Momi, and! it was resolved that tho Te. Momi Land Syndicate be approachcd withi a view to_ having the connection- made. An application from the Hutt Cricket Club'- for the use of the recreation ground and pavilion on tho same terms as last year was referred to the Grounds Committee. ' The Hutt River Board asked for exemption «jf rates, amounting" to £28, on the stop-bank, and on the motion of the Mayor the matter was referred to. the Municipal Corporations' solicitor (Mr. Martin).' . Councillor Ball moved that a special meeting be held prior to the next council meeting for the purpose of taking stops to get the Noxious Weeds , Act to apply' to ! the Hutt Borough, the mover mentioning that he thought the council was- not doing its duty in allowing the growth of certain weeds to go unchecked. The motion was carried.
Tho engineer's report stated that the concreting in Wakefield and Victoria Streets was practically completed; and the cost of the kerbing and channelling to date had been: Labour £48 18s. 9d.; cement, £24 2s. Bd.timber, £3 6s. ; .total, £76 7s. sd. Amount on estimates for the two streets is £127 ss; During the last four days 3740 square yards of tar painting and sanding old work, and 526 square yards 0 fnew work, the cost had been: Old work, 3740 yardsLabour, £12 3b. 9d.; tar, £14 13s. 4d.; total, £26 17s. Id., equal to 1.726 d. per yard, or under ljd. New work, 5261 yards—Labour and cartage, £10 17s 7d. tar, £6 13s. 4d.; total,. £17 10s. lid., equal to Bd." per square yard. . This work, which is li to 2 inches thick,_ is almost as good as tar asphalt, which would cost 2s. per Bquare yard. . One connection had been made with the gas and the water mains, making the total number to date 508 and 980 respectively. Two, permits have been issued under the drainage and sanitary by-laws, making the total number of connections to date 880. Tlie report referred to an accident to a council employee, Arthur Cometti, on October 29. who sustained a fractured arm at the_ Rand; wick Road septic tank. In this connection a resolution expressing sympathy and the liopo that the employeo would soon recover was passed by the council. The, report, was adopted.
