N.Z, TROTTING CUP

. : SOMETHING ABOUT THE COMPETITORS. (By Toleffr-apk.—Special Oorreepondeat)" Christchurch, November 9, Great interest is being -taken in the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting, Which opens to-morrow. The chief feature of the programme is the race for the New Zealand Cup, whicli carries a stake of .£2500,. the largest yel competed for in the Dominion, and a handsome silver cup. The final payments reduced the field for this event to fifteen) and- it seems likely that practically, all the horses engaged will go to the post. The Australian champion Denver Huon figures on the scratch mark. His form in New Zealand last season showed him to be a, house of extreme brilliancy as well as stamina, An injury to one of his heels; sustained just befoie he left Sydney, interrupted his preparation, but he looks very well indeed, = and his party nro confident he will: run a great race. Emmeline, at her best, showed herself to be tho finest mare yet bred in New Zealand, but for some time past she has been racing without much luck, and' it seems as if she,-has lost something of feer old brilliancy. King Cole is the joint-holder with' Emmeline of the Australasian record of 2 min. 8 3-ssec. for one mile. He has done no racing since last November, and as ho has-been giving his tr.ainer some anxiety over troubles with feet and other causes, it seems doubtful if he oan reproduce his best form.

Albert H. won the New Zealand Cup two years ago, and has a record of 4min, B3sec. for two miles. Last season ho showed a disinclination for racing, but in his work this season he has been going more kindly. . . Ravenschild, last year's winner of the big race, has been going exceptionally well in his work, and last week was responsible for the best two-mile performance on the track, his time being faster than his last year's /winning record of 4min. 35 2-ssec. • Don Caesar showed very marked improvement last season, and his brilliant performances in tlio Autumn placed him In tlio front rank. ; He has all. along been one of the fancied candidates for the. big race; and though in the' colder weather he was' trouMen with '-lameness,' jprobfibly; duo tq muajuhr ih§mnati£w,_

, he has quite shaken this off now. -He . has kept his: place in the''public favolir, • I wd seems certain to retain- it.\ ' 1 , Country Belle is a* very speedy mare, 4 ; but whether she will see out'rthe distanoe , . is open to question. In view of her , performances .in the close ,of last season." • ~ ' Bright has got through a Tory 66und ' ■ preparation, and he may be relied on to ! . run an honest race. ' " ■ " Adonis has a good record of winning performances which have shown him to , be fast and a good stayer; . \ ' Win Soon was made favourite right, from the handicaps, despite'the fact that her preparation has not been Tuijntefr ': rupted. She is certain to command a lot of support, and may go out favourite, j Eccentric, Handarene, Bed Mao, and Havoc are to a certain extent an. unknown quantity for the three first-named j are trained away, from headquarters, and Havoc comes from the' North Island, but ' ' acoording to reports he has como through a very satisfactory preparation. ~ j . Lady Clare has a previous Cup victory to her credit, but she has been off .the scene for some time,' and her training J displays. have been somewhat various in quality. j . Owners are reminded that acceptances . for the''first'day's events at the Marl- 1 borough Racing Club's Meeting close r Mi Thursday next. The Mastorton Racing Club made a I profit of £375 65." 2d. on its last meeting. The totalisator tax for the meet- ' ing amounted to £350 7s. lid.FIXTURES. Nov. 7," 9, 11, and 14—Canterbury J.C.
