The steamer Norfolk) which was reported yesterday as on fire off Wilson's Promontory, was beached twenty mile's, west of Cunningham. The latest message states that the fire is under confa'oj- It is anticipated that the Norfolk will be refloated to-day. The vessel left Melbourne on Saturday morning eil route to Sydney with a large general cargo. The fire broke out in No. 2 hold. The amount of damage done has not yet been stated. (Rec. ' , Mr. Samuel Butler, who died m 1902, .was an author whose literary style and flavour was greatly admired. His best-known work was "Erewlion," which contains some interesting references to New Zealand.' The essays.referred to are a reprint from a book first published many years ago, and are based on Butler's experiences when two or three years a settler in Canterbury. Other : works from his pen include "The Fair Haven," and "Tlie Way of All Flesh" (a novel). The "Essays . -just published include in addition a number of hitherto unpublished manuscripts which were found after his death, and, it is interesting to note,' a reprint of certain contributions to the Ohristohurch "Press."
