WILLIAMS PARK

THE QUESTION OF UPKEEP. 1 The matter of the upkeep ,of Williams Park (the Day's Bay Estate) recently acquired by the public of Wellington and suburbs is at present occupying the attention of. the special committee appointed to • supervise all' affairs connected with the park. Prior to' the ! estate being acquired by the publio and handed over to the Wellington City Council to administrate, the grounds were owned by the same company which owned the ferry steamers, and the dost of their upkeep had to be found' but: of the revenue . earned -by the steamers. Now 'the interests are divided as; between the reppresent?;tives of the people (the (Sty Council) and the. owners of the ferry steamers (the- Eastbourne: Borough Council). The latter: body, represented by its I erry Board, admits a liability in respect to upkeep, (which amounts to about_£6oo -a year)', and has' already offered to pay to the City Council 10 P?r cent, of its earnings on Day's Bay tickets on public holidays and in the c » sa ; of special picnic parties, but that, °|rer is not considered enougn to oover the outgoings, and it is not considered (by the Day's Bay sub-committee) that any portion of the upkeep should come out of the general revenue. The sub-committee's proposal to the Ferry Board, is that .10 per cent; of the money paid for all tickets issued to Day p Bay throughout the year would bo a fairer return for the use of He beach, and grounds by the Ferry Board's.passengers. ■ It is hoped that a satisfactory agreement will be arriapiged between the. two bodies, otherwise the subcommittee will have to make a charge for admission to the grounds to all people travelling to Day's Bay;''.' On the. other hand • the Ferry Board by coming •to a agreement would practically assure itself of a monopoly of the ferry traffic to the Bay!
