HELP FOR BELGIUM
:— SHILLING SUBSCRIPTION FUND. That the heart of the British Empire has gone out to gallant Belgium has been well demonstrated already, but New Zealand is to be given another opportonity of showing iri a practical way her sympathy with the little country which has so long been tho battlef round, of Europe. Last evening the •atriotip Sports Entertainment Committee of Wellington decided to launch a scheme of shilling subscriptions. The scheme is to spread over the whole Dominion, and it is expected that a very large sum of money will be raised. This will be a Christmas gift from New Zealand to the Belgians. Mr. C. G. Wilson, the originator of • the scheme, reckons that £25,000 Ehould be raised. To-day a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. C. P. Skerrett, H. Seaton, C. G. Wilson, B. Royle,' Lyon, and A. Marry at t will meet to further tho scheme.
During the meeting gf the committee it was reported that since last meeting (when thei balance to the credit of the committee was £976 lis. 2d.) the receipts had been:—Gift auction, £11 10s.; badges, 19s. 9d.: Professional Orchestra, £29 4s. 3d.; South Wellington concert (per Miss Wilson), £4 155.; City Tramway Department (donation), £25; a total of £71 9s. , The committee set out to raise £1000 for the Patriotic Fund, and has accomplished this. The committee passed votes of thanks in recognition -of assistance rendered, to the Professional Orchestra, Mr. Hamilton Hodges, the Tramway Band, and the Tramway Department of the City Corporation.
