PAHIATUA NOTES.

Two important road works have* been in progress in the '■ Pahiatua .district during the past few months,•. ' namely, the Makaiio-Gorge-Coonoor Road and the Puketoi Road., The Works are being carried out by the Public Works Department, on the co-operative ' system. The formation of the roads named will confer a great boon-on many backblock settlers, who have frequently petitioned the Government to provide, them with a bettor access to Pahiatua, their principal town. In the case of the Ma-kairo-Gorge,-Coonoor Road, the formation of aboat six miles is really a continuation of the existing road, and from Pahiatua to the start of the work is about fourteen, miles. .What was formerly a 6ft. bridle-track is being convertedl into a road 16ft. wide; For some years the Government was, it is stated, rn the habit of making a grant of £50. per year to the Pahiatua County Council to.keep the track in-order. To the Rising Sun settlers especially will the formation of the road prove a • great convenience, as it will.give them a good direct road to Pahiatua, and effect a considerable saving in distance, avoiding a circuitous route of several miles via Makuri. Tiie Puketoi Road extends from the Mount Marchant Road on.the west Jx> the TJtewai Road on the east side. To the start of the work from Pahiatua is about 17 miles, via Kaitawa. The total length' of .the road is ten miles, of which about four have been, formed. Seventy or eighty men ha.ye been employed, and l they have been making good progress. When completed, this road will give access to all the settlers, on the Utewat Road, and will provide a short cut to .settlers living on both sides of the AlfredtonWeber Road, and ■also provido a route' for 'stock from the East Coast.
