lONIC FROM LONDON. At 2 p.m. .yesterday the Shaw-Saviil st«amer lonic arrived in tho stream at Wellington from London, via way port?. After the Port Health Officer had spent an. hour and a half examining the passengers lie liner berthed at tho King's' Wharf at 4 p.m. Tho lonic left the Eoyal Albert Docks, London, at 2 p.m. on September 15, and experienced no delays on. the run dowa to Capo. Town, which wae done in fine clear weather. • Prom the latter port to. lloliart flue weather, with variable westerly winds, was experienced. After ■ having been ashore on the Patca' beach for several daye the South Taranaki Steamship Co.'s Mana woa euccesstully refloated yesterday morning, and berthed at -the wharf at 11.30 a.m. On inquiry at the local agents for the company yesterday a reporter vras Informed that tho Mana 'had suffered no damage. She- is. due at Wellington to-day, and will bo dispatched for Patea on Monday. .;■ ■ SCHOONER WAIPU SOLD. ■-• Messrs. Emboli and Ford, of Auckland, report the sale of the auxiliary schooner Waipu, which has been acquired by a Nopier syndicate.. The Waipu was engaged, in the coal-carrying trade between Whangarei and Auckland, some time ago, but for : tho past three months has been laid up in Auckland Harbour.' She is now on Henderson's slip undergoing overhaul preparatory to sailing for tho Hawke's Bay port under command of Captain G. Soren6en. Tho Waipu is a handy vessel of 57 tons gross. Messrs. DolEety and. Co. will conduot the sale. ■ Tho offerings will consist of the auxiliary cantreboard hold scow Echo, buils at Auckland in 1905 by W. Brown and Sons, of specially picked long lengths of kauri —hardwood sheathed. Her dimensions are; Length, 104 ft. 3in.; breadth, 25ft. Sin.; depth, 6ft. lin.; gross tonnage, 122.31; net tonnage, 99.18. Tho schooner is rigged with square foresail, especially built for the carriage of long lengths of timber, capacity about 100,000 super feet of kauri- timber (one-third on deck) on a draft of 6ft. 6iu., together with two 28-h.p. oil engines, cap. able,of driving the vessel about four knote per hour. Oil winch and heavy lift derrick. The Echo is,described as a particularly Btaunch vessel, well found, and a, smart sailer. She will be offered for sale either as she lies at anchor in Wellington Harbour, or subject to Government overhaul (her- last overhaul took place in April, 1914), with or without engines. In addition' to the Echo there will be. sold, one return multitubular marino (wetback boiler, 7ft. 6in. long, 7ft. 3in. diameter; furnace 3ft. diameter,. 56* plain tubeß. On Sunday last a section of the population turned out and cut a straight channel from the training wall to the sea. One hundred men, with fortyfonr horses and forty ecoqpa, got to work aud excavated sufficient said to enable the river to cut through.
