— fr— . DONALD AND CO.'S DAMAGE, £18,500. ' Mr. A. Donald, of the Auokland and , Island firm of Donald and Co., arrived 1 back from a trip made to Tahiti to find out exactly what damage had been done to the firm's property at Papeete \ b.y the bombardment of the port by the German cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau on September 22. Mr. Don- , aid informed a Dominion reporter that the big store, on. the water-front had practically suffered no damage by the bombardment, but some of the windows at the back had been burnt through. The major portion of tho-damage was that clono to the. market quarter or oentre of the city, which had been made 1 a pretty. ,clean sweep of : by tho fire .which succeeded the shelling' of tho /port. Donald and Co. 'were interested in a good deal of property in that quarter, and had suffered a considerable loss. He had estimated the damage sustained by the, company at £18,500.. Thoro was insurance-on the property destroyed, but not nearly enough to cover the damage dono.
