NO-LICENSE CAMPAIGN
—:—6—:— .There was a very good attendance at St. Augustine's Hall, Petone, last evening, when tho Rev. R. B. S. Hammond, gave an address on the No-Li-censo question. Thci Rev. P. Lascelle's presided. The speaker spoke of his work in New South Wales prisons, and dealt with moral suasion, relating the difficulties of reforming drunkards, whilst the drink was allowed to exist. He also referred to the . No-License areas in_ New Zealand, all of which he had visited, mentioning the tremendous difference the closing of hotel bars made. -Mr. Hammond stated that he had lived in a hotel for some timo. and understood what went on inside these places. Referring to the use of alcohol as a medicine", the speaker stated that much less money was being spent nowadays than hitherto in the hospitals in this connection. ■ Regarding the political aspect of the question, Mr. Hammond expressed the opinion that it was inconsistent for a community to cany a majority for Prohibition, and then to return" men to the House, a majority of whom were against Prohibition. For this reason New Zealand was the laughing-stock of Australia. A hearty vote of thanks was unanimously accorded the speaker, on the motion of Mr. H. Grinstead.
