JOTTINGS PROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Out Spccial Oorresiondenti.) PAHIATUA. At the: annual meeting of the Pahiatua Swimming Club this. week the report showed that excellent progress had been made by the club, since its inception two years ago. Hie balancesheet showed a credit of £16 7s. 3d. from which £5 was devoted to tho Belgian Belief Fund. It was decided to hold the annual carnival on February .3, 1915; also to make every endeavour to promote interest in swimming amongst the children. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow: —Patron, Mr. S. Bolton; president, Mr. J. A. Walsh; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. D. C. Crewe, 11. W. Carpenter, E. P. Badger, R. V. King, W.. R. Richardson, L. W. Longmore, J. D. Wilson, and G. Oxley; secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. W- Wilton; time-keepers, Messrs. G. Oxley and F, Hedges. Messrs. J. Trczise, L. Joyes, A. Cosford, E. Martin, M. Paget, F. Masson,, and J. Collins were. appointed a general committee. The bakers in this district have increased the price of bread to 4sd. per 21b. loaf.

A garden: party, on a ■ large scale, will be held m Pahiatua on November 18, in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund. A social in. support of the same object will be held in the evening. The nominations received for the Pahiatua and Akitio' County Council elections show that in the Pahiatua County, four out of the nine, ridings will be contested, while at Akitio there will be contests for four out of the five-seats. Mr. P. V. Smith has been returned unopposed for the Akitio riding N of the Akitio County Council. For the Pahiatua County, the following have been elected without opposition: C. Avery (Konini riding), B. J. Bengston (Mangatainoka riding), A. Knox (Kaitawa riding), T. Hodgins (Mangaone riding), C. F. Gardner (Makuri riding). J MASTERTON. A mounted defence corps has been formed at Gladstone, and the first,parade is to be held this evening. A letter carrier is Making a special houseito-house canvass in Maßterton, to see that tho whole of the electors are on' the Parliamentary elect-oral roll. A sum .of £64 was taken at a sale of work in Masterton on Wednesday in aid of tie Melanesian Mission Fund. OTAKI. The following are the nominations received for the Horowhenua County Council electionsTokomaru Riding: F: W. ' Venn and G. N. Stephenson; Otaki: H.' Freeman and G. Watson; Te Horo : H. Windloy, Alex. Monk, and G. Catloy; Nirokino: F. A. Broadbelt, G. Watson, J. Kebbell, J. C. Neill.F. C. Retter, and H. J. Richardst ■ The Karori . bowlers played eight Otaki rinks here on Wednesday, and won seven out of-eight games. 1 A man. said to be mentally deranged, has been arrested at Waikanae for damaging property. .
