(From Oar Special Oorrespondesti.] PALMERSTON. , Harper, Fitzgerald, Vickerman, commissioners conducting an inquiry into tho Hiver Board ratepayers' petition,. will visit the river to-day and resume the inquiry on Monday. Mr. J. E. Fulton, of Wellington,, who examined the river on behalf of tho objec-' tors, gave expert engineering evidence, criticising tho cost of the works. He said that possibly the board's first two groynes would prevent further damage at the Fitzroy bend, but further operations should be delayed pending. results. Mr;' R. S. Abraham, H." C. Mellsop, and E. J. Armstrong contended that the district should embrace a more extensive area, and receive a State subsidy. : Mr. Mellsop believed the river would not further encroach on the Fitzro.y bend. ;■-.''' Technical difficulties which were hampering the control of the motor.traffic were jointly discussed by the BoroughCouncil and the Kairangi County Couiir oil recently, and the result was submitted to tho Borough Council on Tuesday. It was explained that tho borough solicitor had advised that regulations should be mado.by the Governor-in-Ouncil, with the exception of speed, over dangerous places. The Minister of Internal Affairs had been asked, to make the necessary regulations or to bring in ' legislation to fix the speed in towns and ..countries...
