MARIST BROTHERS' PUPILS

A SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. The pupils of the Thorndon Marist Brothers' School excelled , themselves in their annual entertainment given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last night. , The proceeds of the. concert-r and they should be considerable, as the Hall was crowded —are to go to relieve the distress caused by the , war. The large audience testified by the encores demanded that they fully appreciated the excellent training given the lads. Among those present was a number.of the clergy" including the Rev. Father Hickson and the Rev; Father; Gondringer. The programme was as follows:— Overture, "Dance of tho Skylarks," James Garrctt; part songs,;."The Admiral's Broom" , (Bevan), ."Evening Hymn" (Rosewig), and "Those Evening Bells" (J. Shaw), given by the pupils; recitation, "How O'Doherty Swam the Channel" (carrying a triple encore). Master Fergus, Reeves;, vocal solo, 'Those Songs My Mother Used To Sing," and violin solo, "Obertass," Master Ben O'Brien; action song, "Curly Headed Coons," junior pupils; recitation, "Bingen on the Rhine," George Lacey; class recitation, "Charge of the Light Brigade," pupils; patriotic, songs and chorus, "A Nation Once. Again," pupils; song (with humming accompaniment), "Autumn Winds," pupils; song, "The Orphan's Appeal," Cyril Simpson, Stewart Emerson, and Tom George; solo, "She Is'..Far From the Land," Harold Trehey: overture, "Silvery Waves," Frank Hally; maze drill (with flags), the pupils; and physical drill, squad prepared by Mr. J. A. Duffy. The latter item was exceptionally well performed, while the singing of "The Orphan's Appeal" brought with it i veritable storm of: coin from tho audience. The entertainment concluded with a farce, "Pat Malloy; A Literary Genius," in which the followiii£ took parts;: Leo O'Counell, Fergus Reeves, Ben O'Brien, Clarence Poppieton, and Cecil Finucane. . The accompanists were masters Frank Hally and ; James Garrett.
