FOR THOSE IN DISTRESS
MEETING OF LOCAL COMMITTEE. Mr. o.' p. Skerrott presided, at. a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Poor'of Great, Britain, Ireland, and Belgium Relief Fund, held yesterday morning. The chairman, announced that he had discussed the matter of the allocation of the i fund with His Excellency the Governor, who agreed that, each branch of tlie'fund should decide for itself the proportion to, bo handed over for the relief of the poor of the countries interested. It was decided to pay for the relief of the distressed of Belgium all moneys specially donated for that purpose and half all' other moneys received. .--■'■ The chairman, was empowered to pay: to His Excellency the sum of £4000 to form part of the first contribution from New Zealand.. Mr. Skerrett reported that Mr. A. M. ■ Samuel, of the Lower, Hutt, desired to. present for the benefit of the fuiid a'handsome tea-set valued at £00. .The offer was received with' thanks; and it was decided to inform Mr! Samuel that the tea-set would be disposed of. either by auction or art union. The general secretary (Mr. Bryor) announced that a donation of £500 had been.received from the Wairarapa War Fund,for the relief of the poor ofBelgium, and said that His Excellency the Governor had intimated that ho' had received the sum of £1000 from the Wanganui branch of. the fund. •Gratification was expressed at -the very generous response which had been made for donations of goods. The second consignment, consisting of 20 tons 'measurement, would go forward by flhe Tainui in a few days. It was pleasing to report that the shipping companies were carrying the goods.frqe of charge.
