A CROCHET BALACLAVA
A correspondent has forwarded the following directions for orocheting a balaclava cap, and strongly recommends the pattern she has given:— Material: Four ounces Paton's Alloa wool; bone" crotchet needle No. 8. ■ The neck part ,is worked, first. Make 20 chains* turn. First roiv: One double crotchet on the 6econd chain, leaving first one as a turning stitch; one double crotchet on ■ each of the remaining 18 stitches, inserting the needle under, back thread only. 1 Second row: One chain one double crotchet on each stitch of former row;, repeat the second row 58 times; there 'will now be 30 double rows; sew neatly to form a, round; work the lower part next, which is a protection on cold nights. i ■ first round: On the edge of the neck part work 63 treble crotchet all round; that is ■ six more stitches than one in each row; work tho three extra stitches at each side of the back seam; that is two stitches instead of one in the three la6t stitches next_ the seam. Second round: * One treble crotchet of each of the first four stitches of former round, two trebles on the'next stitch; repeat from * all round. Third round: * One treble on each of first three stitchos of former round; two trebles on next stitch, and repeat from * all round. Fourth round: One treble on each stitch of: fortuer round. Fifth round: * One treble on each of tho first six stitches of former roultd, two trebles on tho next stitch, and repeat from * all round. Sixth 1 round: One treble on each stitch all round; when working .the treble crotchet insert the-needle under the back,thread only. Edge round: * One chain, miss one stitch, 3 trebles on the.next stitch; one chain three trebles on the same'stitch, one chain miss one stitch, one double crotchet on the next stitch; repeat from * all round; insert' needle under both threads when working this round. The head: The head part is worked next. Count ten of the double tows to the right of the seam, attach the wool there and work 25 double cj'otchet on, the edge of the neck before reaching the seam, the 25 double crotchet at the left side of, the 6oara, turn. Second row: One chain, one double crotchet on each stitch of former row; there are now ten double rows left s in the'neck part; this is for the,front or chin. Repeat the second row seven times. Tenth row: One chain one double crotchet on each of the first 24 stitches, two double crotchet on each of the noxt two stitches, one double crotchet on tho last 24 stitches. Eleventh Bow: One chain, ono double crotchet on each stitch of the former row. •'■■■■■■ Twelfth row: One oham, one double crotchet on each of\ the first 25 stitches, two double' crotchet on the. next two stitches, one double orotchet on e!\ch of the last 25 stitches. N Thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth rows: Same as the eleventh ro>v. ' .Sixteenth row: 1 chain, '1 double crotchet on the first .* 20. stitches,' 2 double crotchet on'each of the-next 2 stitches, 1 double 'crotchet on each of the 'last -26 stitches. Seventeenth row: 1 chain, 1 double crotchet on each'st-itch of. former roTC..v-. .' Eighteenth row : vl:!bhain,\ I."double crotchet on first 27 stitches, 2 double orotchet on thi next 2 stitohes ; I'double. orotchet on the last 27 stitches.. ' /Nineteenth row: Same as "eleventh row. - . Twentieth row: 1 chain, 1 double crotchet on first-28 stitches,' 2 double crotchet on the next 2 stitches, 1 double crotchet on the last 28 stitches. Twenty-first row: Same as eleventh row. • . / Twenty-second row: 1 chain, 1 double crotchet on fitst 29 fjtitches, 2 double, crotchet into next, 2 stitches, 1 double crotchet in last' 29 stitches. Twenty-third row: Sams as eleventh row. . . • Twenty-fourth row: 1 ohain, 1 double crotchet in first 30 stitches, 2 doubles into next 2 stitches, and 1 double orotchet into last 30 stitches. Next ten rows: Saine as eleventh row. _ Thirty-fifth rowj 1 ohain * 1 double crotchet on the first 24 stitches, then miss 1 stitch, 1 double crotchet on the next stitoh, repeat' from * 7 times, 1 double crotchet on the noxt 3 stitches, , turn .the double crotchet on the first 12 stitohes, turn * miss 1 stitch, 1 ,double crotchet on the next, stitch, repeat from " 8 times, 1 double crotchet on the next 3 stitches, turn 1 double crotchet on the first 14 stitches, turn # . miss 1 stitch, 1 double crotohet on tne next stitch, repeat from the last * ten times,, 1 double crotchet on the next 3 stitches, turn 1 double crotchet on the first 15 stitches, turn *, miss 1 stitch, 1 double crotchet on the next 2 stitches, repeat from the last * 6 times; turn, 1 double crotchet on each stitch 1 to'the end, turn the double crotchet on each stitch of former row. Work across once more and by this time the top part will benarrow enough. Breakaway the wool and attach it at the left side of the chin part. , ■■ - • First round: 1 double crotchet all round it should be 85 altogether, next 6 rounds one very tight double' crotchetoil each stitch of the former rounds. Tho laßt ro\ind work very tightly, Decrease a stitch here and there if it is not coming in enough. . ■ . .
Our correspondent says that after the 34 rows if tho bead part she filled tlio space in with double crotchet to form the top part of the head, and did not quite follow tho directions, and then broke the wool off and orotclietod round the opening. j
The Croydon School sports at Day's Bay, originally fixed for Thursday next, will now not be held until the end or the term. The date will be intimated later. .
