'After having been delayed at ■Wellington for .over 36 hours on account of trouble with her firemen, the 'Union Company's collier Waitomo, 4214 tons, oleared for Newcastle at 6 p.m." yesterday.. Although the Shipping and Seamen Act. has stipulated that the Waitomo should carry sis firemen and three trimmers, the stokehold crew of the vessel demanded that 1 the TJnion Company should place three extra firemen on board. After the locals office of the Union. Company had communicated with the head office! tho demand ivas acceded to. ■ The /Waitomo has been ohartered to take a load of coal out East, and it is understood that the fact of tho Union Company having entered into the contract haa a lot to do .with granting the .men's' demands., ■"A Country. Cousin" writes:— "Amongst the'many other schemes for helping the distressed poor in Britain haa it occurred to your most practical ■useful Ladies' Committee that's shipment of Christmas puddings, to accompany all the meat that is being sent from' New Zealand, would bo a most welcome gift to the people who will be in such need of sufficient food -to keep them alive? ..Their distress; and want scarcely bears thinking of unless it urges one to fresh efforts in every possible direction:-'- Anything- shipped Ijy the middle of November should be there, easily, by Christmas Day. If : anyone will initiate this scheme I will promise that my district shall be well canvassed, but it is quite likely that someone already, has the matter in hand."
