HOSPITAL SHIP STRIKES A MINE
ALL THE NURSES SAVED VESSEL ASHORE AND BREAKING UP London, October 30. The - hospital sliip Rohilla was wrecked in. a gale at Whitby, on the coast of Yorkshire, and is breaking up. Several persons were, drowned and eighty are still aboard. All the nurses were saved. LATER DETAILS. RQHILLA STRUCK A MINE. (Rec. November 1, 2.40 p.m.) London, October 30. , The steamer Rohilla, bound from Queens'ferry to Dunkirk, to pick up Belgian wounded, struck a mine at four, o'clock in the. morning.' A ten rific sea. was running. There', were two hundred souls on, board, • including a medical unit. The ship's bows, were smashed. Lifeboats rescued a few of -the men on board, but many clung to the wreckage until they became exhausted and were swept away. ■ The ship finally., broke ■■ into two pieces. Eleven men were drowned when the stern was carried away, and the remainder took refuge on the bridge and in the rigging. The lifeboats made desperate efforts at' rescue. One of them was smashed and two of her crew were drowned. Sixty of the Rohilla's complement wore rescued. A hundred'remainod on the forepart of the ship when attempts at rescue had to bo'abandoned. Rock-et-lines proved unavailing. Many bodies have been washed ashore. The trawler Rosilla also struck a mine .in-the North Sea,- and the captain and mate wero drowned. VESSEL'S POSITION WORSE. (Rec. November 1, 10.20 p.m.) London,' October 31, evening. Tho Rohilla's position is worse. She has broken into three parts and is settling down. The bridge is the only refugo for those aboard. A number jumped into the sea. Some wore drowned; others were washed up on the beach. Several further attempts by the lifeboats to.reach the wreck have been unavailing, and so likewise have been renowod attempts with tho Tocket lines. The Rohilla was a twin-screw steamer of 7409 tons, built by Harland and Wolff, Ltd., for tho British India Steam Navigation Co., Ltd. FATE OF THE- AMIRAL GANTE- - AUME. (Rec. November 1, 2.30 p.m.) Paris, October 80. Offioial.— The Amjral Ganteaumo, tho French steamer which was sunk while engaged in convoying refugees from Ostend, was torpedoed without reason, contrary to all international usages of war.
