THE ELECTORAL ROLLS
THE OPPOSITION IS ANXIOUS. Another complaint in regard to the electoral rolls was voiced in the House yesterday afternoon by Sir Joseph Ward. Ho said that ho had been informed by soveral'people whoso names were on the rolls at tho last election, that their names were not now on the' rolls. .One man had told him that he knew of no fewer than thirty peopio who wero enrolled at the last election, and who were not now enrolled. And it so liappened'that all these men wore workers. He had received a similar ccmplaint from Christchurch. He referred to the Wellington Central main roll, which he said contained nearly 4000 names loss this year than it contained three years ago. The Prime Minister, in the absence of the Minister in Charge of the Electoral Department, said that everything possible was being done to place the rolls in a thoroughly satisfactory position, but it was impossible to -avoid Ho remembered the' case of ft man being elected to the House some yeirs ago, whose name was not oil any printed roll. That was duo to a clerical error. Tli.it man was a member of the House to-day. Sir Joseph Ward: He was not on our side of tho House.' Mr. Massey repeated that tho Government was doing all that was possible to obtain clean rolls.; As for tho Wellington Central roll, ho believed this year's roll would bo much larger than past rolls of that district. Mr. Payne (Grey Lynn) asked whether the Prime Minister would agree to recommit tho Legislature Bill in order to provide that all persons over the age of 21 should bo allowed to yoto. Mr. Massey. That is impossible, as the Bill has already passed both Houses.
