AN ELECTION CANARD
TO ALARM CIVIL SERVANTS. An election campaign, rumour was' definitely contradicted in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. G. R. Sykes asked whether ifr; was true, as had heen rumoured, that; the Government contemplated dismiss-r----ing any Civil Servants. The Hon. A. L. Herdman said hecould not understand how these rumours got into circulation. It was a silly rumour, for which there was no foundation whatever in fact. Mr. Allen: Started by the Opposition, as a great many others are. Sir Joseph Ward 6aid he wished to give Mr. Allen's statement an emphatic denial'. The Opposition had nofc started rumours. Mr. Allen: You don't know. Mr. Russell: As a member of the Opposition, I demand that the Minister of Finance should withdraw his statement. (Laughter and noisy interjeo tions.) Mr. Speaker: Order!
