RAIDER EMDEN AGAIN

To-day's news from the French theatre of the war indicates some activity along that portion, of tho Allies' line which is holding • the Aisne and tho Woeuvie. A violent night attack which burst upon the Allies' line in the Craonne district, was sharply repulsed, with considerable loss to the Germans. Further along, to the east, are signs of German activity in Alsace, while the French are*strengthening the outer works of the great frontier fortress of Bclfort. In Belgium severe fighting continues. Hie British, advance from .Yprea has reached within five miles of Roulers (recently reoccupied by tho Germans) while there is also a report that the TJnipu Jack is flying at'' • Tliourout, which is beyond Roulers. The Germans are being steadily driven back from the Nieuport-Dixmude line, the fighting, in this region being accountod the most sanguinary' of the war, mrfre severe, even, than at the Meurthe and tho Nethe. The German attack is losing its vigour, and everywhere the position of the Allies has. been • maintained—at certain points advanced. In the .Eastern theatre, tho Russians'have , resumed their advance into East Prussia, and signalised the resumption of active operations in that-region by defeating a violent attack of the enemy. Tho movement of tho great Russian wings operating west,of Warsaw is slowly developing.- An important •item is the statement that Russian cavalry have occupied a' position described as "Lmedte"—a place not to be found on any of'the maps our disposal—and so'menaced tho Germans', main line of comiuuni- ' cations. In South Africa, General Botha has struck sharply and de- ' cisively at tho De Wet-Beyers rebellion in the Orange River Colony .and the Western Transvaal, making an effective start by completely routing Beyers's commando, and taking 80 prisoners. Major Brand has paraded his commando, declared his loyalty, and challenged his men to desert the Union. The indications are pointing to a very halfJ heartod rebellion, if these events are any criterion. The German commerce raider Emden has again sailed into the limelight, sinking this time a. Japanese merchant vessel.
