EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS

CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE CHIMNEY LEVELLED ON EAST COAST. (By Telegraph.— Prere Association.) Clsborne, October 28. A severe earthquake was felt at 11.47 a.m. yesterday. The ground shook in an alarming manner, and peoplo in tho grandstand at , the Poverty Bay Show lost no time iu making for the open. The "quake" was long and steady, and lasted fully a minute.' Tokoniaru Bay again suffered heavily, the Farmers' Co-op. Stores, which sustained'damage in the last earthquake, being again reduced to chaos. At Mr. Kami's house, the chimneys fell through the roof, carried away the kitchen ceiling, smashed a table, and went clean through the floor.

At Pauriki, Mr. George Busby's station, a bricklayer had juet finished rebuilding three chimneys shaken down in the last earthquake, and was having a smoke preparatory to leaving the job, when the chimneys were- again thrown down. It is roported that Poturu homestead vras split cloan in two. Chimnoys are dewn in all directions, and there were innumerable landslides all along the hills, great clouds of dust giving the appearance of liugh bush fires. The Mangahaore Stream is still much, discoloured as^the result of landslides in the back country. Strangely enough it wae exactly three weeks ago to-day that the last big earthquake did so much damage. Port Awauui reports that chimneys rebuilt after the last earthquake were shaken down. Considerable damage was done to household goods. No loss 'of life- is reported. Tho following telegram was receivedyesterday by tho.Secretary to the General Post Office from tho Postmaster, Tckomaru Bay:—-"Regret to report another depressing shock of earthquake; direction fast to west. Many chimneys again levelled to tho ground, and stores suffered! considerably. People becoming alarmed" . ■ ■ REPORTS FROM OTHER QUARTERS. Wanganul, October 28. A smart shock of earthquake- was felt *t 11.50 to-day. Napier, October 28. . There were two heavy and sustained shocks of earthquake at 11.46 this morning.- ■ Hastings, October 28. A prolonged earthquake was felt here at 11.49 this morning. •■*■'- Auckand, October 28. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here ad twelve- minutes to twelve to-day. * (From Our Special Correspondent.) Mas tor ton, Ootober 28. A violont shock of earthquake was experienced here at 11.50 a.m. on Tuesday. The shock was of several seconds duration, and caused mild alarm, but no damage. • A slight earth tremor was felt in Wellington at 11.45 a.m. yesterday. It was noticeable particularly in tho Town Hall, where tho electroliers oscillated quite four inches under tho influenco of the earth movement.
