THE DOMINION'S CREDIT HIGHER THAN EVER.
The Legislative Council met at. 2.30 p.m. The Kauri Gum Industry Amendment Bill, the Wages Protection and Contractors' Liens BUI, the State Advances Amendment Bill, and the Land Laws Amendment Bill were introduced from the House of Representatives and read a first time. " The Education Reserves Amendment Bill, which was further considered in Committee, was reported with amendmont, read a third time, and passed. LOCAL BILLS. The following Local Bills were put through all stages and passed:—Auckland City and Auckland Harbour Board Empowering Bill, Auckland Harbour Board Empowering Bill, Christchurch District Drainage Amendment Bill, Christchurch Milk Supply and Markets Bill, Dunedin District Drainage ond Sewerage Acts Amendment Bill, Dunedin City (Waipori Falls) Land .Vesting Bill, Eltham Drainage Board Bill, Napier Harbour Board Empowering and Loan Bill, Riecarton Bush Bill, Southland Land Drainago Bill, Takapuna Borough Foreshore Vesting Bill, Woitara Harbour Board Empowering Bill, and the Whangarei Borough Land Vesting Bill. In regard to the Napier Harbour Board Empowering and Loan Bill the Hon. J. D. Ormond pointed out that there had been a good deal of opposition .to the Bill last year; There was very considerable difference of opinion in the 'district about the Question of the two iiarbours. The railway on the East Coast had been delayed through , those difficulties. The passing of tho Bill would only have the effect of referring the question to the ratepayers. He was liot going to offer any opposition to tho Bill now, and he hoped that the Harbour Board would refer tho matter to the ratepayers at an early date. KAURI CUM INDUSTRY BILL. The Hon. H. D. BELL moved the second reading of the Kauri Gum Industry Amendment Bill, whioh provides the machinery to enable the Government to assist the industry; £50.000 is provided for the purpose, and the assistance is necessary owing to the upsetting influence of the war. Mr. Bell said" that he wished the same assistance'could be given .to other industries, but wherever the commodities were perishable they had to stand aside. The Bill was reported from Committee without amendment, read a third time and passed. STATE ADVANCES AMENDMENT. The State Advances Amendment Bill, vhich enables transfer to the Treasury if capital liabilities in respect of >ranches,,nQti now., administered by tho luperinto'ndent, was put through, the remaining stages without discussion, Snd passed. ..The Council rose at 4.30* p.m.
