WAIRARAPA INCLINE

GOVERNMENT POLICY DEFINED. / . .

An important statement concerning the proposed Wairarapa deviation was made in the House of Representatives last night on the third reading of the Loan Bill , by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. W. Fraser). The Hon. W. FRASER.said that he had put no eumon the Estimates for the Wairarapa deviation because he did not think tho time was ripe for it. "We have no fixed ,lino yet/ f ho said, 'but I know tho matter is one which so deeply concerns the Wairarapa district that during .the recess I intend to have a proper survey made in order to determine which is tha best route.

Mr. Witty: A survey of seveTal routes to find out the best.

Mr. Fraser: That is all. There have been flying -.surveys of several routes, but it ie doubtful yet which is the best route. I think it ie' right that during the recess an investigation should be made bo that Parliament will be in possession of information as to which is the best route. ' "*

Mr, G. W. Ruseell: I have no doubt that the people of the Wairarapa will read with satisfaction the statement that lias just been made. I can assure the people of the Wairarapa that we , on this side of the House are equally solicitous for their interests with those on the Government sido. He added that if there should happen to be ft change of Government the work would still be carried out.

Dr. A. K.. Newman: It is very interosting to hear the speech of the honourable member who has just sat down, after ho has 6upportcl a party that has done nothing for eighteen years. Now we havo a wise and senBible Government the work is going to 1)0 dono, and I think it is one of the most important works that can be undertaken. It is a piece of cool effrontery for tho honourable member to get up now and 6ay what he has eaid.
