EXCITING FINISH MIDLANE'S STAND FOR EAST The first sot of matches of this season was concluded on Saturday afternoon. University defeated Central, and East scored a v.ictory ovor North. The encounter between East'and North was full of ups and downs, and tho finish was close and exciting. When stumps were drawn on tho previous Saturday, East held a (strong position; but, unexpectedly, North got what looked liko a safe lead on. Saturday. This they still held late in tho afternoon. With forty minutes to play, East needed forty-five runs for a win, and tliey appeared to have very little clianco of getting tliem. Midlane was at tlie crease, and 6eemed sure to stayarid make runs, but the problem was to get anyone to stay wit'h him. However, at this stage Henderson appeared, and he assisted Midlane so ably tliat gradually East's chances rose. A few minutes before the clock would have closed the match in North's favour, East compiled tlie required number of runs, and thus snatclicd victory. East's success ; was i due chiefly to the fine batting of Midlane.
