The composition of tlio Maori con»; tingent made a very favourable impression upon tie Minister of Defence > (the Hon. Jas. Allen) 011 Saturday.; "There' is the raw material of a'fina body of 6oldiers in the_ contingent," Mr. Allen remarked, on ! his return from, an inspection of tie Avondale camp. , "Many of tlio men are old scholars of St Stephen's, Te Aute, Clareville,. the Otaki Mission School, and other schools for Maori boys. Somo_ of them held the ranks of non-commissioned officers 1 in the school cadet companies, slid are finding that training of value. One of the Maoris has already been appointed, to a lioutenancy." Mr. Allen said that probably all the subalterns would ' . be Maoris. At present he could not 6ay whether any of them would be promoted to the rank of captain. A desire has been expressed_ by some: . of the men on garrison duty in Samoa ', that they should be permitted to vol-, unteor for service in Europe, and an assurance was given by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. Jas. Allen) on Saturday that the desired opportunity, will be given to them.
