AUSTEO-GERMANS DEFEATED BY RUSSIANS
The military correspondents of tiro German newspapers—the "Berliner Tageblatt" and the Berlin "Lokal Anzeiger"—both agree that the operations on the Belgian coast are of extreme importance to Germany,'and the desperate efforts made by the enemy to secure success in this neighbourhood amply confirm the views of the military, ■writers. But the German venture is going amiss—the Allies have not only repulsed the numerous violent attacks, but have apparently advanced their line, and a fierce battle is now raging 15 miles Bouth of Bruges. Germany appears to have used up her first line of fighting men, for the reinforcements that are now being hurled against the Allies are largely composed of youths and old men, while the officers havo been taken from the retired list. From the Russian side the news is also favourable. The Germans who were soundly thrashed at Ivangorod in Poland have been kept mercilessly on the retreat, and the Russians have captured considerable quantities of munitions. The Austro-German forces operating in the neighbourhood qf Przemysl in Galicia have also suffered defeat, while ail official message from Montenegro indicates that the Austrians were badly beaten by the Servians and Montenegrins. Greece is becopiing resljij.e, the;,continued expulsion of Greeks from Turkish towns having exasperated "the population. On the naval side of the campaign there is comparatively little doing. A British destroyer rammed and Bank a German submarine off the Dutoh coast, and an Austrian submarine is said to have been destroyed by the Nifa, but this vessel's nam© does not appear on the French Naval List. The German third-claßs cruiser Karlsruhe 1 has been very active in the Atlantic, and the, sinking of eleven British merchant vessels stands to her credit. An official message received by the Prime Minister gives a very full accoymt of the efforts made by the. Admiralty te capture the eight or nine German cruisers that are' roaming the seas.. In the vast expanse of waters the enemy's vessels have a wide scope for playing hide-and-seek.
