“CITY OF SILENCE"
ANTWERP UNDER GERMAN RULE (Reo. October 22, 6 p.m.) London, October 21. It is officially stated that in Antwerp 1030 houses have been damaged and 300 totally destroyed. A correspondent who visited Antwerp after the German occupation describes it as a' 'City of Silence." In traversing the city he did not see 200 people, and not a single hotel was open excepting those commandeered by the officers. A few cafes were open, but the food supply was small, and tho only water supply was from the Scheldt, _ which was dirty., and salty. An epidemic now threatens the city. Rotterdam Teports a general return of Belgian refugees. Eight trains, each carrying a thousand, left daal, and there are similar movements at othori centres.—("Times" and Sydney "Sup" Services.) HOLLAND REFUSES FOOD. (Rec. October 22, .6 p.m.) London, * October 21. It is' stated that Germany suggested to Holland that she should re-provision the districts in Belgium occupied by tho Germans, declaring that Germany would provide the necessary railway wagons. The Allies held this would bo tantamount to an abandonment of neutrality, since Germany would bo better able to provision her armies if Holland relieved her of'feeding tho Belgians. The Netherlands thereupon declined the project.—("Times" and Sydney "Sim" Services.) GARRISON REDUCED. (Rec. October 22, 10.55 p.m.) i Amstordam, October 21. The Germans .have curtailed tho garrison of Antwerp, and have sent machine guns to the front. The water supply has been restored, 'and the tramways are running. OneJhundred and fifty houses have been absolutely destroyed, and many have been plundered. The churches are not damaged, and tho public buildings, except tho law courts, aro almost spared.
