Sea and laiKpnghting near the coast is proceeding favourably to the Allies. , Near Warsaw and Przemysl the Russians; have gained partial advantages. Tho Government states that there is no foundation for the reported Somalilaud rebellion and the capture of British officials.
HARD FIGHTING BY BELGIANS. London, October 22, 0.40 a.m. .. Official.—Throughout Tuesday the enemy made vigorous counter-attacks against tho Allies' front, but were driven back,, suffering considerable losses.. The Belgian Army in particular distinguished itself by its spirited defence of its position. For the last few davs the Belgian Army in trenches has been holding a line of thirty kilometres with the greatest determination against heavy odds.. Tho Belgians have also made successful counter-attacks. .. ■ THE NAVY'S SHARE. Official.—Admiralty announces H-M.S. (?) /Tonitors, Severn, Humber and Mersey have been recently engaged in operations off the Belgian coast, > firing on the right flank of the German Army. Owing to their light draught they have been able to contribute materially to the success of operations in that district, abundantly justifying their acquisition on the outbreak of war. Detachments with machine guns were landed from these vessels to assist in tho ! defence of Nieuport, .in'which they per- ! formed meritorious service. .' SUNK BY THE EMDEN. I • iW London, October 21. Marine, Tokio:—"I desire, on behalf of the British Admiralty and Royal Navy, to express at this crucial stage of tho war our deep sense of the efforts and energy with which the Japanese Navy is sustaining the cause of their Ally. Apart from the great object of the extermination of the main German base in the Pacific, Japanese ships and. squadrons are everywhere giving us help of an invaluable character in the protection of trade, tho search for tho enemy's ships, and the convoy of troops to the decisive theatre of conflict." " (2)' Minister of Marino to the Admiralty:—"On behalf of the Imperial Japanese Navy, I tender you my warmest thanks for your, sincere and cordial message. 1 assure you it is a matter of the utmost satisfaction to us both that perfect harmony and understanding exists everywhere between the two Allied Navies, which strikes a true note of the main object of the compact, and ' which will tend to hasten the attainment of our ultimate goal."
