RANSOM FOR AN OPERATION, • (Rec. October 22, 6 p.m.)'
London, October 21. A German prince of- very high rant was wounded while fighting near Epernay. No Gorman surgeon' was'in tko town, and a staff officer obtained Dr. Veron, the celebrated French surgeon, who agreed to perform an operation on condition he was paid whatever'fee ho demanded. After the operation he asked for £7000, which was the sum tlio Germans had levied from Epernay. The amount was paid to .the doctor the same evening in gold cbiri bearing the Kaiser's bead.
The Germans had also stolen 50,000 bottles of champagne.—("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.)
