The Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. Men) leaves for Auckland to-day, for the purpose .of inspecting the Maori contingent now in camp there. The inspection will tako place on Saturday morning. , The Minister will leave on hie return to Wellington on Sunday night. Sir Douglas and Lady Mawson leave for London by the Euahine to-morrow. Subsequently Sir Douglas Mawson will lecture through America on his work and experiences in the Antarctic. Dr. Sydney Smith, _'-M-.8., Ch.B., D.P.H., has been appointed a district health officer under the Public Health Act. ... Mr. A. W- Bennett was appointed general manager for the Dominion at a meeting of the directors of the. New Zealand Shipping Company last Tues- /"■■ day. • , ■'' - < • Yesterday afternoon the Wellington Hospital Board accepted, with regret, the resignations of Senior Nurses Arrowsinith, Boyd, and Finlayson. i Mr. J. T. Julian, a well-known contractor in Auckland, who has been on a. visit to England, will arrive in Wellington from London by E.M.S. lonic' on Tuesday, November. 3. _ Mr. A. E. Mabin, manager of Messrs. Lovm and Co.'s wool department, who has been visiting the Old Country, will return to Wellington by the lonio on Tuesday, November 3. _ Th© Government has appointed Mr. vasper Nicholls a member of the Oamaxu Harbour Board, vice Mr. William Gardner, resigned. During the elocutionary recital given in aid of the sufferers in the recent mining disaster at Huntly at the Concert Chamber last evening, the pupils and their parents presented Mr. and Mrs. J. Culford Bell with a very handsome silver and glass flower epergne. The presentation was made during the interval by Mr. W. A. Spencer.. Mr. Bell, in reply, stated that elocution was not only their work, but their hobby, and they liked it. It was .but natural that those pupils who showed a readiness and aptitude for reciting made the best progress, but ho trusted that all benefited by the instruction given. On bohalf of his wife and himself, Mr. "Bell returned thanks for the handsomo present which ho said would occupy a place of honour in their home. (Appla-Msc.) The little function .concluded with cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Bell.
