THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

[Bi, Qlßkcob-I

A cold wind'blew at Trenthairi yesterday morning during training operations, but there was an absonco oi rain, which

would have beon welcomed by trainers, Tho grass gallop insido the raile was at tho disposal of trainers, but most of them preferred to work their charges on the Inn. Very little fast work was accomplished.

Gold Necklace covered, four furlongs in 515c0., and Chakwana registered liko time over a similar distance. A little while back) Chakwana had to bo eased in her work, and the brief respite seems to have benefited her.considerably She now looks better than she has ever previously looked, but she may require a race to key her up to concert pitch.

Ladylike and Martian Princess were associated in a gallop over four furlongs, the time being 60ieec.. ' .

Charteroso and Big Blast left four Jutlongs bohind in 515e0., but All Guns and an Obligado golding took slightly longer to the same distance.

Arlington and Kosian were companions in a six-furlong gnllop, the former covering the distance with ease in a tick under lmin. Msec. Tho jockey on Kosian lost a etirrup-letvther during tho gallop, and had to ease his mount.

sprinted over furlongs in company with the ; Hastings Stakes winner Asterias. The distance was covered in the fast time of 36j6e0, It was a good gallop. ■ j

After breakfast Cyra covered, nve furlongs, iu.lmia. 6seo.

Useful work was also aooomplifllied by Want, Kilrain,. Miraculous, Mount Viotoria, Roumania, Fair Rosamond, Chortle, Multiply, Grit Lawless,. Sea Pink, Sternhall, Nenno Camulus, Gold Foil, Blenot. Mvrry Roe, !La Reina, Kooya, Balboa, Beldame, Baupani, Campeador, Birkful, Labour Day, Ringform, Undecided, Moulu, Bonny Dream, Sauci, Wishful, Turna, and a number of others. i

Silver Monarch has always been regarded at Xrentham as a bold fencer, but yesterday morning hie effort looked almost a poor one oonipared with that of The Pole (San Remo-;Eomanv Girl). The pair wero associated in a schooling taea over six fences of the steeplcohase course, H. Thompson having the.mount on Silver Monarch, and P. Patorson being on The Pole. The latter seemed to easily liold his companion for pace, and gained nearly two lengths at every fence. Plumer, who was to have accompanied tho pair, found the pace too fast to keep up.

Yesterday's arrivals at Trenthain in. oluded J. H. Prosser'e team frora Porjrua, and G. Price's team from Awnpuni.

1 , . D. Jones is expected to reach Trantham to-morrow with E-eputation, who may start favourite in tho Champion Plato on Monday.'

Stuart Waddelt Is' bringing thirteen hoi-ses from Hastings. They are Aneuish, Hymettfus, Hyettus, Daytiino, Haekayne, Hoy, Husheen, Idcoliem, Hyla, Freya, Kominohe, Day Fly, and Shaki.

Great interest is being taken in the Champion Plate, to bo run at Trentham on Monday next. The' three-year-old division is' very strongly represented, but it is ■ confidently anticipated that .the class will meet with sold opposition from tho older horses, which include , Kilrain, •Expect, and Merry Roe. - Some of the ridersannounced as having mounts in the race aro \V. Young (Kilrain), A. Oliver (Expeot), J. Buchanan (Aferry Eoe), B. Berry (BalboS), C. Emerson (Caumlns), F. E. Jones (First Flight), and L. Wilson (Keputation). I

Campeador is a poor track worker on hia Trentham showing. He appeared to be feeling the effects of the hard going yesterday, while doing slow work. ; Chortle is a much-improved horse, and seems likely to retain the position he •holds for tne' C.J.C. Stewards 7 Handioap. Three other candidates for that event have been well supported with fanoied horses for the New Zealand Cup. They are First 'Glanoe, Bimeter, and Beldame, whose Teepeotrve riders may., be B. Deeley, C. Emerson, and L. Wileon. Beldame is at .Trentham now, and the full sister to the Toorak. Handicap winner, Eathlea, ie without, doubt in great heart. If started at Trentham she will be ridden by Wilson. The Auckland horseman. A. J. M'Flinn, will ride Grey King h the hurdle raoe at *the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting. This will be M'Plinn's first ride since his accident at Morton.. . Aye Ready has been withdrawn from the \Wlesley Stakes, Luck's Out has been scratched for the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Trenthani. Nominations for the Spring Meeting of tho Marlborough Racing Club, and for the annual meeting of the • Marlborough Trotting Club, close with the eecretary, Mr. L. Griffiths, Blenhoim, -on Monday next. '..'■'.. Garance did not accompany the other membera.of G. Price's team to Trentham. If ho is well enough next week, he may be sent to Eiccarton. '. /TRACK. WORK AT RICCARTON. (By Teletraph.—Special Oorrcepondent.) Christchurch, October 21. A thick haze hung over the couree at Eiccarton in the early hours of the morning, but did not cause inconvenience- in any way, as none of the horses were given fast work. -A large number accomplished useful tasks. , ' ■ The -Eiccarton horses engaged at tue Wellington Spring Meeting were all going north on Thursday, but in answer to a hasty summons from: the Union Steam Shin Company they were got away yesterday, after a lot of bustle. The "Lookeron" in , the "Evening News"' writes of them as follows:— \ Fabrikoff is engaged in the Champion Plate, but I cannot fancy his chance of winning over a mile and a quarter. Golden Prince is engaged an the two. year-old events, but is not forward enough to have much dhance of beating more seasoned opponents. ' . H.Cutts took four of Sir George Clifford's horses, a very useful team. First Flight will run in tho Champion Plate, and I expect him to fight out a great race., Battle Eve ie to run in the Wellesley Stakes and will make a much bolder show than he did in the Dunedin Stakes. Tho running there was all wrong. Quarantine is to run in the handicaps over a distance and on the work he has been doing should be prominent. Floweret was showing a lot of naco some time ago, but she became fractious and lias been eased. She may run in one of the two-year-cJd events. • Bee has been galloping well. She is a very gross filly, and is sure to run better after slie has had a race. Twelfth Night seems to have gone off a little through striking himself, but if the ground is wet he should run well. Tannhauser and Martigues are not at the top of their form, but are both well. Medallist is to have another try to win a selling race at Wellington. Tho old horse is very sore, and I cannot liko his chance if the going is hard, but if wet ho is sure to run well.
