THE PRINCIPAL PRIZEWINNERS,

The Hawke's Bay Agricultural and , Pastoral Society's fifty-first spring show ; opened at Hastings to-day under the most ■ perfect'conditions. The weather wa3 ivarm and 'sininy.: :For a first day there was a;.remarkableattendance, of , the public, probably constituting a record in this respect. ' Visitors were present from all parts of tho Dominion. The \ ivar has naturally influenced the show, but the: entries,.though not equal to those at "the Jubilee Show, are extremely; satisfactory, even, showing an improvement on previous years in oiio or two classes. No inferior animals have made their appearance this year, tho pens maintaining a surprisingly good average. Taken all round the cattle and sheep arc as good as they have ever ■been, the beef classes .being particularly strong.,'-- '.-'■■■, The dairy cattle appear to toe' somewhat weaker than., usual, though' Gome fine quality is displayed in the Jerseys./ Polled' Angus sorts aro ako well up to the standard, while tho Shorthorns stand alono.for quality. .'■■ Sheep are not so' numerous as In ■ previous years, but there is not a bad niiimal'anioiig thorn. The lambs in thefat stock classes, as in fact •; right ' through the sheep section, are decidedly superior, and the export class for lambs suitable for. freezing forms a promising feature of the show. , . ■ • ■ ■•■ :. ThoTthoroughbred, harness, saddle, 'and farmers' horses are all well up,to. the average, and tho entries. in this j section-' aro quito satisfactory. Theall- '-. round:<[uality of the exhibits has given the judges a somewhat difficult task, but their awards have raised , no un- . favourable comments, and numerous competitors have expressed, their satisfaction,;at the results of the judging. V, The Draught Horses. Of the draught horses judged to-day, .Mr; Douglas M'Lean (Maraekakaho) was awardod first for yearling colt foaled since August 1, 1913, and Mr. 0. M'Naughton (Patea) first for two-year-old colt foaled since August 1, 1912. Mrs. J. AVall (Hastings), Messrs. Jack Taylor (Havelock North), and W. Sinclair (Mahora) have bean awarded firsts ; an. harness horses and ponies. - Championships In Cattle. >"■ The competitors in the cattle section" include all the.usual well-known breeders.. Mr. Ernest Short (Feilding) was awarded no fewer, than three champions (two' ordinary and one reser.vo) for: Here• ■'ford' bull, cow,., and heifer (reserve), while Mr. Douglas M'Lean. (Maraekakaho) secured two champions (bull and heifer), and ono reserve champion (bull). , ilr. W. T. Williamson was awarded the ticket for the champion cow; Mr. TV. , I. ■Lovelock (Palmerston North), scooped the .pool in Holstein-JPriesiaas with two champions (bull and heifer) and two reservo champions'(bull and cow). Other champions awarded were — Ayrshires—C. E. C. Webb (Wairarapa), bull and cow. Polled Angus—Mr. A. S. G. Carlyon (Tilcolcino), cow; Mr. J. A. Macfarlane, hull, reservo champion.. Messrs. Paul Hunter (Porangahau) and C. H. Thompson'. (Twyford) were awarded • champion and reserve champion respectively for 'Alderney and' Jersey bulls. The Sheep Classes. Keen competition was evidenced hi the. sheep classes, and here too the champions were .all awarded to wellknown breeders, such as Mrs. J. D. Orinoud, Messrs. Douglas M'Leari, W. There has not been tho same rush noticeable as._ in former years. Probably the entries will be less, not only in competitions, but in cattle and horses. Sheep 'will provide some now stock not shown in Carterton-before, while some of those breeders who have shown cattle and sheep in past years will be. absent.
