MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.
'At laet night's meeting of the-Vic-toria College Council, Mr. H. H. Ostler presided, and there were also present: Sir Robert Stout, tho Rev. W. A. Evans, Dr. Prondergast Knight, -i)r. Hector, the Hon. j! G. W. Aitken,•■ M.L.C., the Hon. A: T. Maginnity, M.L.C., Messrs. T. R. Fleming, W Ferguson, A. R. Atkinson, W.H. Mor-v ton, R. M'Callum, M.P., -and C. B.' Morison; K.C. Leave of absence was granted to the' Hon. A. L. Herdraan, and' Messrs: Charles Wilson and C. ■ Watson. ' .' . A letter was reecived from Victor V. Branford, of 3 St. Helen's Place, London, 'enclosing a copy of a protest against the burning of Lou vain by the German Army, as signed by various members of Universities and other learned or scientific bodies in Dublin, It was suggested that a similar protest be signed, oy a few lnembors of every university and learned or scientific body throughout the world, and be forwarded by each group of signatories throughout the world. A form of protest was enolosed. . Sir, Robert Stout mentioned that the University of Now Zealand had taken .note of the burning of Louvain before anything was heard of this protest. They had forwarded a resolution condoling with the University authorities, of Louvain in what they had suffered, and expressing great regret. That resolution had been forwarded a month ago.. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided that; members of tho council should sign the form of protest enolosed, and should forward it to the Government.'. .. The' Finance and General Purpose Committee reported that a letter had been, received from the City Council suggesting that improvements bo_ made to a dangerous- corner near Victoria College, where Kelburn Para'de abuts on Salamanca Road. Tho committee recommended that the suggestion- bo adopted, and this'course was agreed to. On tho recommendation of the Finance Committee, it was decided that tho suggestion of tho Professorial Board be adopted, and ?that Parliament be nsked to so amend the Victoria College Amendwont Act as liot to limit tho election of tho three lecturer members of tho Professorial Board to any particular chairs. Tho Now Zealand University Amendment Bill was discussed, and.it was decided that certain minor alterations be submitted for consideration of Parliament. .
