The police are interning Austriane and Germans of military age at the rate of a hundred per day. , Additional hotels are announcing that no Germans or Austrians are employed on the premises. KAISER'S MASTER SPY. London, October 20. The "Daily Express" describes Steinbauer, whoso name vas mentioned in the hearing of a charge of espionage against Ernst as the Kaiser's master spy. Eβ acted in close co-operation with the Potsdam Military Bureaucracy' "and established a vast network of naval and military espionage in Britain. Hβ was supplied with abundant money, and thousands of Germans in every walk of life acted as subsidiaries to Steiibauer'e agents. When the Kaiser visited England in 1911, Steinbauer, as a meYnber of the Imperial suite, stayed at Buckingham Palace. The Admiralty and the War .Office became aware of Steinbauer's role at the end of 1910, and thenceforth shadowed him, and largely thwarted his plans. SHOT AT BUT ESCAPES. London, Ootober 20. A sentry at Pembroke Dock challenged a man who was creeping towards the guns. , The.man escaped, but the sentry in firing at him killed a soldier sleeping in a tent and wounded another. > Tta sight of a gun which was found to be' missing was discovered in the track of the stranger's flight. WIRELESS PLANT DISCOVERED. London; October 20. It is reported that a house at Kingborn, commanding a view of the Firth of Forth, was raided and wireless apparatus discovered. BONA FIDES ESTABLISHED. .-..'.•■■■ ' London, October 20. The authorities are satisfied with the bona fides of the occupants of tho Edinburgh factory raided by the military. The London "Observer" stated that the military had raided a large German factory in Edinburgh. It was built ten years ago. £30,000 was spent on magnificent concrete foundations, the,proprietor explaining that enormously heavy machinery was required. The factory is capable of accommodating 800 men, but never more than sis' Germans were seen. The machinery neyer arrived, 'nor did the' factory start.' Its situation dominates Edinburgh, and big guns in it could hit llosyth and the Forth Bridge. WHAT A DETECTIVE HEARD. (Rec. October 21, 10.15 p.m.) London, October 20. Karl Finck, a German, has been remanded undor the Official S.ecrets Act. A detective heard the defendant discu66ing plans of a land-mine, which he described as boing capable of annihilating the British Army. ANOTHER POSSIBLE GUN SITE. (Rec. October 22, 0.25 a.m.) London, October 20. The "Evening News" reports the dis. covory of heavy concrete foundations in a German factory dominating Tor Bay, in Devonshire. ORDERED TO QUIT. (Rec. October 22, 0.55 a.m.) London, Ootober 21. Every German and Austrian resident of Brighton has been ordered to quit within a few days. TREASON IN CANADA. NATURALISED GERMANS ON TRIAL. (Reo. October 22, 0.25 a.m.)' Ottawa, October 21. The military authorities of Montreal have discovered a widespread plot, backed by ample funds from tho Austrian Government, to smuggle from this, country resorvists, of whom a hundred thousand are in Canada. Israel Stanhofer, a naturalised Britisher, has been arrested. He supplied reservists with tickets and , money, and instructed them to pass the border as Rumanians. This is the first treason case since tho Riel trial of 1885. . Twenty thousand Austrians at Montreal are destitute, and soup-kitchons are being opened. '" ■ Louis Riel, who had fifteen yeaxs earlier led a revolt- in Hudson's Bay, in 1885 headed an insurrection of French half-breeds and Indians in the North-West Territories. Riel was tried at Regina in July, 1885, and executed on November 17.
