JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL ' CENTRES.. (From Our Special Correspondents.) PALMERSTON NORTH. At the annual meeting of the MaJiawatu and West Coast Caledonian Society on Monday night a very satisfactory report and balance-sheet waa presented. The following officers were elected Patron, Mr. P. A. M'Hardy ; president, Mr. J. Hastings; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. D. Buchanan, H. D. Buchanan, F. Jackson, and A. Mathieson; secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. M'Kenzie; committee, Messrs. J. Anderson, J. Balsillie, J. Ellis, J. Evans, 6. G. D. Gordon, S. Jaffray, R. Lloya, D. Munro, G. Marshall,, J. Marshall, and D. M'Dowell; handicapper, Mr. J. Collingwood; auditor, Mr. Walter Turner. At the coming Agricultural Show a party of women will conduct an additional refreshment marquee and give the entire profits to the Patriotic and Relief Funds. It is hoped to get all provisions freo, including gifts of milk and butter from the dairy factories. Tlio promoters expect to get a profit of £300. „ r A meeting of women on Monddy called by the Mayor, for the Patriotic Committee, discussed'measures for the providing of gifts of clothing for the British and Belgian poor. Owing to material purchased locally being subject to duty it was ■ resolved to send £100 to purchase material in Britain. Numerous gifts' of left-off clothing were re- > ported to be ready for delivery, and well-to-do helpers are invited to make up additional garments. A quantity of railway sleepers was found on fire at the Terrace End Station on Monday night, but /wa6 extinguished by the fire brigade. 'Earlier, an outbreak took the brigade to Boundary Road, where they found that a cottage beyond the reach of the water supply was on fire. They were unable to render assistance. GREYTOWN. Tha local Maoris held a social in the Foresters' Hall last night to farewell six of their race who are joining the Maori contingent. The Horticultural Society held its annual meeting on Monday; night and elected officers and committee and decided to hold the next show on November 26. ( MASTERTON. Tho main roll for tlio Masterton electorate contains the names of 6208 electors, compared with 6937 on the last" main roll. The Masterton citizens' defence corps is quite an institution in the town. Hundreds of citizens assemble twice a week and parade through the streets. A man named David Flett has been admitted to the Masterton Hospital, suffering from concussion of tho brain. He was thrown from his horse ou tho Upper Plain Eoad, where he lay all niglit in an unconscious condition. Tho Wairarapa contingent of Natives, to tho number of fifteen, was given a hearty send-off from the Masterton Tailway station yesterday afternoon. Members of the Wairarapa Calodonian Pipo Band played patriotic airs. Tlio Masterton Municipal Brass Baiul havo received a large parcel of band music, kindly donated by a member of the Royal 'Horse Guards' Band, at present stationed at Winders, England.
