DEFENCE, FORCE AT OCEAN ISLAND. Brisbane, October 20. 'A Canadian transport lias . arrived from Ocean Island, Gilbert Archipelago. It reports that while there a vessel arrived with provisions and ammunition for the Germans at Nauru. Tho' provisions were commandeered and'the ammunition thrown overboard. It transpired that tho bullets wora made of wood. _ Tho residents of Ocean Island havo formed a strong defence force. Occan Island is about 1500 acres in extent, and is now the site of the most successful operations by tho Pacifio Phosphate Company, whoso European employees there number about SO. TIIO natives of tho island in 1911 num- . bered 486. \
