Robin will leave for 'Auckland to-morrow to inspect the Maori contingent in camp at Avondale. One of th'e_ first New Zealanders to be wounded in the war was Lieutenant B. C. Freyberg, of the Royal Naval Reserve, who was in action with the British Naval Division 'at Antwerp. Private cable advice states that Lieutenant Freyberg, who received a'wound in the arm, is progressing satisfactorily, and is now in London. • His friends in Wellington, and 'in swimming circles throughout New Zealand, will be pleased to hear that he has" just been promoted to the rank of captain. Troopor Peroival Spencer Billiard, of No. 2 Company, C Squadron, of the Expeditionary Force, died ,in tho Wellington Hospital yesterday-of pneumonia. The late trooper was a nephew of Mr and Mrs. F. C. Cantain H. M.. W. Richardson, N.Z.S.C., adjutant of the sth _ (Wellington) Hegiment, has been appointed to tako charge of No. 8 area group, with headquarters at Hawera.
Mr. A. Linley returned to Wellington from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. During Iris absence lie completed arrangements for the visit to New Zealand of the "Humpty Dumpty" Pantomime Company, which is to commence a tour of tbe Dominion next month.
Mr. Robert Campbell (son of Mrs. A. Campbell, of Great' North Road, Auckland), who has been in tho Old Country for the last twelve months, at the .wireless school, applied for admission to the Black Watch, but being of fine physique, he was asked to ioin the Dragoon Guards. Mr. Campbell is 22 years of age, and was a member of the Highland Regiment in Auckland.
Mr T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay, wlio has been attending the spring race meeting at Sydney, returned yesterday by the Moeraki. He was accompanied . by Mrs. Lowry. Yesterday afternoon references were made in the Legislative Council to the public services of the late Mr. T. K. Macdonald' and the late Jlr. Walter Syrnes. flio Council recorded an expression of its regret at the death of these' gentlemen, and expressed its sympathy with 'their relatives. . The question of the rate of. pay to the men now on duty in the Now Zealand forts was referred to in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, when Mr. Bradney (Auckland West) asked the Minister of Defence whether ho would increase the pay to the same rate as that paid to the members of the Expeditionary Force. 'The Hon. Jas. Allen 6aid that this matter, was being gone into at the present time. The Government had practically decided not to make any alteration in the rate of pay, but he was not prepared at present to 6ay exactly what wouldbo done. The Government had already increased tho rate of pay to married privates to the rate 'paid to members of the Expeditionary Force. He did not quite know what would be done in regard to' the officers. They would either be brought up to the same level as the officers of the Expeditionary Force or else they would be paid the rate payable to officers on the permanent staff. A very old Reefton pioneer, Mrs. Brazil, dropped dead yesterday (says a Press Association telegram). She had beon suffering for some little time. Mrs. Brazil was one of the first settlers in the district. Mention was made at 'the' annual meeting of the Wellington Volunteer Fire Police last night of tho loss the corps had sustained in. tho death of the secretary, Mr. W. E. Von Bernewitz, to whom ' the corps owed a debt of gratitude for the time, caro, and patience he put into its affairs. His death occurred,on August 17, and the was interred, at Karori with full brigade honours. •• Appreciation of the services of Sir. F. P., Kelly as a member of the Eastbourne Borough Council were p'laccd on record at tho last meeting of the council. The death of 3lr. Donald M'Leay, of Douglas Street, removes from the community a man wlio was generally respected, and one wlifl has been connoctet! with St. John's Presbyterian Church for many years. The deceased, who was 65 years of age, came to Wellington from tho south in 1875, and has resided here ever since. The service at tho graveside was conducted by the Revs. Dr. Gibb and James Paterson. The Hospital, authorities last -night reported an improvement in condition of Mr. F. T. Clark, who .was injured in a: motor, accident on the Hutt Road last week. Captain. H. W. Parsons, master of the Union Company's steamer Tarawora, has been appointed harbourmaster at Napier, via Captain Lake, resigned. Captain Lake has been granted three'months' leave on full pay, as a mark of the Harbour Board's appreciation of his valuable services during the'past twelve years. At the meoting of the Wellington Volunteer Kre Police last nteht, seven years' service medals were presented to tho secretary, Mr. .Horace Baker, and Mr. Henry Woolcott. In handing over tho gbld medals the Mayor (Mr. J.> P. ■ Luke) said that it gave him considerable pleasure to do so. The medals were accompanied by the good -wishes of members and councillors. The recipients suitably'responded.
